MIGRANT PRESS RELEASE
Anita Santos, Executive Director of Philadelphia Legal Assistance, announces the initiation of a federally funded program to provide legal services to migrant and seasonal farmworkers throughout the state of Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania Farmworker Project will represent farmworkers in administrative and civil proceedings regarding violations of the labor laws, the federal Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Workers Protection Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act and violations of state laws, in particular the Pennsylvania Seasonal Farm Labor Act, among others.
The Project will represent income eligible farmworker organizations as well as farmworkers who suffer lack of protections from pesticides, unsafe living and working conditions and exploitation of farmworkers by labor contractors and employers.
Philadelphia Legal Assistance will work with community and governmental groups who serve migrant and seasonal farmworkers to provide legal education to workers, including mushroom workers, about issues related to their legal rights.
The Pennsylvania Farmworker Project will supplement legal services provided by the longstanding Friends of Farmworkers organization, which has been the only legal services organization for farmworkers in Pennsylvania until now. The Project is currently staffed by an attorney, Iris E. Coloma-Gaines and a paralegal, Mary Ellen Beaver. The Project conducts intake at the Kennett Area Senior Center, 427 South Walnut Street, Kennett Square on Mondays, 2:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. The Project can be reached by calling 1-888-541-1544.
