Don't Believe Conspiracies That Tell You Not To Pay Your Taxes!

A man looks through the money in his wallet

It's Tax Tip Tuesday! The internet is full of misinformation, conspiracy theories, and lies about almost any topic you can imagine. Things are no different when it comes to income taxes. YouTubers, social media influencers, random accounts on Reddit; the internet is awash in people claiming that you don’t need to pay your taxes or that the income tax is unconstitutional or illegal.

The IRS calls these people “tax protesters.” Some genuinely believe that the income tax is illegal. A lot of them are just looking to take your money by making you pay for bad advice or services that will end up causing you legal problems down the road. No matter what type of tax protester you may run into, don’t listen to their lies.

Tax protesters have a wide variety of impressive sounding arguments as to why the income tax is illegal or why you don’t need to pay it. Their arguments are often dressed up in fancy legalese and cite sources like Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), the Internal Revenue Code, or even the U.S. Constitution.

No matter how convincing their arguments may seem at first glance, the IRS and the U.S. court system calls them all “frivolous arguments.”
That means that not only do these arguments carry no weight with the IRS or in a U.S. court, they also leave the people making the arguments open to all sort of legal penalties for standing by them.
