The October 15th Tax Extension Deadline is Almost Here

If you filed an extension request with the IRS back in April, your new deadline to file your 2024 federal and Pennsylvania tax returns is October 15th. That deadline is coming up quickly! If you file your taxes after October 15th and you owe, the IRS will charge a big penalty for not filing by your deadline.

The good news is that there are still free tax preparation options, but you can’t wait any longer to request help from them. They may stop taking new clients at any time, so act now to request their help!

A couple of months ago, the federal government announced that the IRS would stop issuing refunds by paper check starting September 30th. We still don’t know if they will hold firm to this date. However, even if they don’t, the delay probably won’t be long. It’s highly likely that by next year, the IRS will stop issuing paper checks, so you’ll need a bank account to receive your 2025 refund.

This means that if you are requesting a refund from the IRS, you should have a bank account that can receive deposits from the federal government. Philadelphia has partnered with Bank On (joinbankon.org) to try to help everyone have access to a free or affordable bank account. Some credit unions and online banks also have free options.
