Family Law Unit Staff Attorney

Philadelphia Legal Assistance (PLA) seeks to immediately hire a full-time attorney for its Family Law Unit.  PLA is a non-profit legal services organization primarily funded by the Legal Services Corporation. PLA views the practice of family law to be an integral part of the war on poverty and family violence.  This includes taking a wide variety and complex mix of family law cases, including child custody, child and spousal support, protection from abuse and divorce. The family law practice at PLA also focuses on issues of family violence. 

 

The PLA Family Law Unit attorney must be an assertive litigator with both courtroom presence and good research and writing skills, empathetic to client concerns (particularly family violence), able to deal with highly emotional situations, willing to work as part of a team of both attorneys and paralegals, and always maintain the highest ethical standards. The family law attorney will also perform intake, outreach and community education to various client and advocate groups throughout Philadelphia, and work with the Family Law Unit team.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Law degree and admission to a State Bar.  Candidates with at least 3 to 5 years litigation experience preferred.  Commitment to family violence issues preferred.  Prior work experience at a public interest law firm or in the area of family law preferred.  Ability to speak and write Spanish or other language effectively is preferred, but not necessary.

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Salary is commensurate with years of experience based on union scale. Full health coverage. Generous holiday and leave benefits.
